MILAN, Italy--As it happens, the incursion of McDonald's into European markets has turned up some interesting and unexpected consequences. In Italy, particularly, birthplace of Slow Food, there was both grinding of beef and gnashing of teeth. One of the top chefs in Italy, Gualtiero Marchesi, actually signed on as a consultant to McDonald's to attempt to infuse flavor from the inside.

Meantime, according to the New York Times, the rogues in Milano have launched a string of burger joints. Some of the blasphemy can be attributed to local apostates; some to expats. Mamma mia! What is the world coming to? Next thing you know, they'll have more than two all-beef patties; they'll have two Popes.
