The reality (my takeaway): This is navel-gazing at its most annoying, the story of a guy who justifies a wrenching career change by remembering every glass, every vine, every grape along his path to becoming a wine maker. Ray Walker romanticizes the mundane tasks (destemming his first 100 bins of grapes by hand, no less), recalling every sentence he ever spoke in pidgin French. What saves the book from being totally insufferable is its enthusiasm for some of the details of French life (the jambon persillé, for example). At least the book is so slight that it's a fast read! Walker is no doubt a good schnook, but a schnook just the same.
